Manchester United Condemn Racist Abuse at Paul Pogba

Manchester United said they have zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and condemn people who expressed racist abuse at Paul Pogba.

Pogba missed the crucial penalty in the shootout 1-1 draw to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the week 2 of Premier League last Tuesday morning.

“The individuals who expressed these views do not represent the values of our great club and it is encouraging to see the vast majority of our fans condemn this on social media also,” United said in a statement.

“Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against in through our #AllRedEqual initiative.

“We will work to identify the few involved in these incidents and take the strongest course of action available to us. We also encourage social media companies to take action in these cases.” United added.

Meanwhile, Pogba team-mate Harry Maguire tweeted his support for the former Juventus star. The former Tottenham Hotspur defender also called for social media sites to do more to prevent players being abused.

“Enough now, this needs to stop Twitter. Manchester United is a family. Paul Pogba is a huge part of that family. You attack him you attack us all.” Maguire tweeted.

“Disgusting. Social media need to do something about it. Every account that is opened should be verified by a passport/driving licence. Stop these pathetic trolls making numerous accounts to abuse people,” Maguire added.

Pogba was becoming the third player in the Premier League to have received racist abuse in the past week due to missing penalty.

Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham was also subjected to racial abuse after missing a penalty shootout loss to Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup final.

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling had also suffered similar abused at Chelsea in last December. However, the England international did not have much to say about the incident, but instead drew a connection between how the media treats black footballers and racism and aggression from the sides.
