Messi’s eyes are on the ball and the Goalkeeper too

Lionel Messi made a fantastic record in the Spanish League match against Real Valladolid at the Nuevo Jose Zorilla Stadium, last Tuesday (22/12/2020) local time. Barcelona won the match 3-0. Barca’s goals were scored by Clement Lenglet (21′), Martin Braithwaite (35′) and Lionel Messi (65′).

That one goal against Valladolid made Messi surpass the achievements of legendary Brazilian striker, Pele. Lionel Messi officially becomes the player with the highest number of goals for a club.

Messi has successfully scored 644 goals for Barcelona in various competitions! As for Pele, he scored 643 career goals for Santos.

As it turns out, Lionel Messi has a habit of looking at one limb of the goalkeeper before scoring a goal. This was stated by Atletico Madrid goalkeeper, Jan Oblak.

Oblak is a goalkeeper with number one quality in Europe. The 27-year-old keeper was even named the Best Goalkeeper in the Spanish League for four times in a row. Jan Oblak won the award in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Oblak also played a big role in bringing Atletico Madrid to the top of the 2020-2021 LaLiga standings. Atletico have conceded the least number of goals (5) thanks to Oblak’s crucial role.

However, Oblak admits that Lionel Messi has advantages that make him and all the goalkeepers always have difficulties.

“Messi has scored a lot of goals against me. Too many,” said Jan Oblak. “He is a great player, an extraordinary player, the best player. So many times when Messi scores goals, you feel that you can’t understand how he can score goals so easily. Sometimes, it feels like Messi is just passing the ball to the goal, not even a shot.”, he added.

Jan Oblak has tasted 10 times his goal post broken into by Lionel Messi. Oblak also revealed Lionel Messi’s cleverness before hitting the opponent’s goal.

“Messi saw my feet,” said Jan Oblak. “If I take one step, he’ll look at it and shoot the other side. That’s why he’s the best. Messi doesn’t show this, but he always sees it. Messi’s eyes are on the ball, but he is looking at you too. I feel Messi saw everything,”, Oblak added.

Even though he is 33 years old, Lionel Messi has not seen losing sharpness in the 2020-2021 season. Messi has scored seven goals in 14 appearances in the Spanish League. The captain of Barcelona and the Argentine national team has also scored three goals in four matches in the Champions League.
