Mirra Andreeva Avoids Shocking Defeat In Cleveland

Mirra Andreeva

Mirra Andreeva proved once again that she is one of the biggest talents in the WTA tournament when she defeated Tamara Korpatsch at the 2023 Cleveland Open.

It seems that the youth phenomenon in the WTA tournament is on the rise, but right now, no star is as bright as Andreeva, except for Cori Gauff who has established herself as one of the tennis players to be reckoned with, especially last week when she won her first career WTA 1000 level title in Cincinnati although just 19 years old.

And the 16-year-old may be following in the footsteps of American Gauff, who stole the tennis world’s attention when he was just 15. That is the same age when the 16-year-old beat the then world number 14, Beatriz Haddad Maia in Madrid in 2023 and since then, she has proven that this was not just a fluke.

After a stellar run at Wimbledon in 2023 by qualifying for the fourth round, she broke into the top 100 and has only played one tournament since then in Lausanne. Despite beating Dayana Yastremska in the first round, she couldn’t maintain her momentum in the second round, but that has passed and now is the time for her to focus on the Cleveland Open.

Initially, the 16-year-old tennis player will face 43-year-old tennis player, Venus Williams, who decided to withdraw from the match at the last minute due to injury so that the German national, Tamara Korpatsch stepped forward to fill the void.

But Korpatsch is not entirely a stranger as the 16-year-old beat him in qualifying at Wimbledon this season.

In the first set of their meeting at the Cleveland Open this week, Mirra Andreeva looked unstoppable after she won it unanimously. Not staying silent, Korpatsch showed his fighting power and won the second set, so the match had to be decided through a decisive set.

But the 16-year-old tennis player was able to avoid shock defeat, including snatching three games in a row before picking up a 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 victory.

For a place in the Cleveland Open quarter-finals, Andreeva will challenge ninth seed, Sloane Stephens after the host tennis player frustrated compatriot, Lauren Davis 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

In other action, another young tennis player, Clara Tauson caused a shock defeat when she beat second seed and Grand Slam champion, Barbora Krejcikova 6-4, 6-1. In the second round, she will challenge Canadian tennis player, Leylah Annie Fernandez, who slaughtered Czech tennis player, Linda Noskova 6-0, 6-2.
