The Portuguese coach, Jose Mourinho, is getting closer to his dismissal after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur nearing the end of the 2020/2021 Premier League.
Mourinho was sacked just six days ahead of the Tottenham vs Manchester City match in the Premier League Cup final at the weekend. Mourinho had to leave his post as coach less than 18 months since being appointed to replace Mauricio Pochettino.
Mourinho was appointed as Tottenham’s new coach in November 2019. He was under a four-year contract to coach Harry Kane et al.
In the first season, Mourinho led Tottenham to finish sixth and secured a ticket to the Europa League qualifying round after slumping at the start of the season. In this season, Tottenham and Mourinho had entered the market for championships until they finally struggled to get into the top four zone at the end of this season.
Mourinho has struggled to revive Tottenham since being eliminated from the Europa League. In the last six matches, Tottenham have even won only once by swallowing three defeats and two draws in all competitions.
This dismissal made the title The Special One change to The Sacked One. The reason is, this is the third time in a row Mourinho has been sacked by the team he coached.
In 2015, Mourinho, who was undergoing his second adventure at Chelsea, was sacked by management following the team’s poor results. Before the dismissal took place, Mourinho was reportedly involved in a dispute with several Blues players.
Mourinho finally had to be willing to lose his position because Chelsea slumped in the 16th position of the 16 matches that have been undertaken.
During his career at Manchester United, Mourinho had to experience a similar fate. The former Inter Milan and Real Madrid coach had to lose his position due to a series of bad results that Man United suffered in 2018.
Tottenham’s decision to fire Mourinho is bold. Apart from having six weeks left for the season, Tottenham also still have a chance to win trophy this season.
Tottenham have already qualified for the League Cup final and will face Manchester City on April 25.
In the conditions of preparation for this crucial match, Tottenham’s management chose to replace Mourinho. Ryan Mason will hold Tottenham as interim coach.
“Jose and his staff have been with us in our most challenging moments as a club.”
“On a personal level, I enjoy working with him and regret that things did not go our way,” said Daniel Levy in announcing Mourinho’s sacking.
