Atletico Madrid suffered a big defeat at Karaiskakis Stadium 3-2 on Tuesday in the phase of the opening group stage game. Olympiakos did play very well and some of the spectators did affirm that this victory was 100% earned.
This way Olympiakos did achieve the three points against the last year runners up and showed the game worth being noticed for the other stages of the Championship.
Atletico Madrid has come to Greece feeling great after having beaten Real Madrid in Primera but critics do point out that there is a small number of football teams that can come to Greece and be absolutely sure that they are going to win. This assumption was fatal to Atletico Madrid this Tuesday.
Olympiakos played well since the very beginning of the match – perhaps that is why some of the spectators did not have any doubts about who should have left the game as a winner. In the 13th minute Arthur Masuaku scored. This fantastic goal by Masuaku was assisted by Ibrahim Afellay. It was precisely Afellay that managed to score for the second time for Olympiakos in the 31st minute after great performance.
By the half time of the match Diego Simeone´s player Mario Mandzukic managed to score and important goal in the 38th minute and reduced the score deficit. However, Kostas Mitroglou scored in 73th minute and scored for fantastic 3:1. Kostas Mitroglou is back from Fulham and has just returned to the club bringing it some shining performance.
All that was left for Atletico to do is achieve the goal for 3:2 and reduce the deficit again. Antoine Griezmann scored in the 86th minute. Koke assisted this goal but it didn´t succeed to stop Olympiakos from getting the three points. In addition, some of the football fans did state for different sources that this actually is not a big surprise if we have in mind the last year´s scenario with Manchester United.
However, in the second game of this group there was no similar scenario as in this one. There were no surprises and Juventus managed to beat Malme with the result 2:0 in Torino.
