Ons Jabeur Looks Mighty In Rogers Cup First Match

Ons Jabeur

Ons Jabeur Tunisian national tennis player managed to set foot in the second round of the Rogers Cup, Montreal season 2021 with a convincing victory.

The 13th seed played ruthlessly when thrashing French qualifier Clara Burel 6-1, 6-3.

The 26-year-old missed out on qualifying on his previous visit to the 2019 Rogers Cup, but he has faced little trouble on his debut at the tournament this season after knocking out world number 101 Burel in 55 minutes in the first meeting between the two players.

A career high to date at world number 22 after winning the first title of his career at Birmingham and progressing to the Wimbledon quarter-finals, Jabeur bagged his 34th win of the 2021 season by converting five of the eight break point opportunities he created en route to beating Burel.

Ons Jabeur combined strong winner returns with agile dropshots as one of his trademarks, en route to a 4-0 lead in the first set. He saved two break point opportunities at 4-1 before taking a set lead.

Maintaining the momentum, Jabeur opened the second set with a 4-0 lead, but this time Burel showed the fighting power to narrow the gap to 3-5.

However, the Tunisian tennis player smoothly closed the match without many problems to book a place in the second round of the Rogers Cup.

Waiting for Jabeur in the second round is a Russian tennis player, Daria Kasatkina or a Croatian tennis player, Petra Martic.

If Jabeur manages to overcome one of these players in the second round, he will have a chance to meet the second seed and defending champion, Bianca Andreescu or the British tennis player, Harriet Dart.

Dart strolled into the second round of the Rogers Cup after struggling hard to overthrow the host’s young tennis player, Leylah Annie Fernandez with a tight result 7-5, 7-6.

In another action, Burel’s compatriot, Fiona Ferro had more luck. The middle position showed 2-6, 6-2, 0-0 when Ferro’s opponent, Australian tennis player Ajla Tomljanovic decided to withdraw from the match.

Stepping into the second round of the Rogers Cup, Ferro will next challenge seventh seed Petra Kvitova. In other action, the Argentinean, Nadia Podoroska was dominant when she defeated Poland’s Magda Linette 6-1, 6-2 and will face ninth seed Elise Mertens or Italian Camila Giorgi in the second round.
