Patriots write history in defensive Super Bowl

Tom Brady got 262 passing yards, Bill Belichick’s defense held up and the New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 on Sunday night at the 53 Super Bowl.

The Brady-Belichick tandem won a sixth Super Bowl, but it was not the kind of match expected at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Fans believed they were witnessing an explosive duel between two of the NFL’s top four attacks, but it was ultimately the most opportunistic team that fled with the Vince-Lombardi Trophy.

Running back Sony Michel managed a two-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to give the Patriots a 10-3 lead. This was his sixth major in these series, which is a record for a rookie.

“We finally managed to score a touchdown and the defense played its best game of the year,” said Brady, who has become the most successful player in NFL history.

Quarterback Jared Goff had the opportunity to replicate and allow the Rams to tie the game, but he slipped while attempting a pass in the area and the ball ended his momentum in the hands of the Patriots Stephon cornerback Gilmore.

Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski put the game out of reach with just 76 seconds remaining with a 41-yard punt.

Both teams had no touchdown after three quarters, which was a first in the final match. The total of 16 points is the lowest ever recorded in this final of American football.

The previous mark belonged to the Super Bowl VII which ended in a score of 14 to 7 for the Miami Dolphins in front of the Washington Redskins.

“We are a tireless team. We never gave up. When we play as we did tonight, we are unbeatable.” said linebacker Don’t’a Hightower, who helped the Patriots’ defense to give the Super Bowl the least points, equaling the Dallas Cowboys record in 1972.

Brady completed 21 of 35 passes and was intercepted. Michel carried the ball 18 times for 94 yards while catcher Julian Edelman made 10 catches for 141 yards. Edelman has also been named the most useful player of the game.

Goff saw 19 of his 38 passes entered for 229-yard flyovers. The duo Todd Gurley and C.J. Anderson failed to carry the Rams offense and had 57 yards in 17 runs.

“It’s the toughest defeat I’ve seen so far, it kills me. It’s terrible. I wanted to play better. I dream of being able to remake millions of games.” said Goff.

The two teams met in February 2002 while the Rams played in St. Louis. The Patriots won the sixth Super Bowl in their history, which equates the Pittsburgh Steelers to the NFL’s top.
