Sergey Kovalev beats Eleider Alvarez to reclaim the WBO light heavyweight title

Sergey Kovalev did everything he needed to do regain the WBO light heavyweight title from Eleider Alvarez on Sunday morning in Frisco, Texas.

The Russian fought a smart, professional duel and raced to an easy unanimous decision by scores of 116-112 twice and 120-108 to reclaim the belt Alvarez grabbed from him in last August.

“Kovalev has been better. He was well prepared and instead of trying the home run as he did before, he let go of his hands.” Promoter Yvon Michel said.

“Eleider did not follow his game plan and perhaps had a bad perception of things. He will surely come to understand, because during the whole fight, he was not able to adjust.

“While spreading his energies, Kovalev obviously had less intensity, but Eleider was not intense by throwing so infrequently.

“In the first fight, all the jabs of Eleider hurt him. This time, his jab was not so incisive and there was nothing behind to support it. But it is not dramatic, he will eventually learn.” Michel added.

Is it Kovalev who has reinvented himself or would not it not rather Alvarez who delivered a notorious cons-performance to explain his failure in his first defense of his title?

Fans are likely to debate for a long time to answer this question, but Alvarez coach’s Marc Ramsay is convinced that it is not Kovalev aspirant who has signaled himself to flee with the victory achieved by unanimous decision of the judges.

“I did not find Kovalev [Saturday] tonight stronger than he was in Atlantic City [last August]. Kovalev tended to move with his jab, keeping his head a little to his right and shifting to the left, which prevented Eleider from placing his jab down and right up, but it was nothing of major. But it was nothing insurmountable.” Ramsay said.

“He just was not active enough. He had some good times here and there in the fight, he would have had to repeat it a good dozen times per round. He was not throwing enough punches.

“There are evenings like that and it’s very difficult to explain. We will have to analyze this much more deeply, since he had a much better training camp.” Ramsay added.

According to data compiled by CompuBox, Alvarez only launched 369 shots throughout the fight, while he had attempted 251 in the space of 7 rounds last August.

Kovalev on the other hand, launched 816 shots against 339 in August. No need to have an obscure relationship with John Nash to understand that the champion left the aspirant worked as he pleased during the duel.
