Rumoured to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso responds. The Bayer Leverkusen coach admitted that he was used to the rumours circulating about him since he was a player.
Carlo Ancelotti is still under contract with Real Madrid until next summer. However, it was often reported that the coach from Italy would leave, especially because of the news that the Brazilian national team was interested.
Several names of prospective new coaches for Real Madrid have emerged, including Xabi Alonso. The former Real Madrid midfielder is doing well as coach of Bayer Leverkusen.
However, Alonso promised to stay with Bayer Leverkusen. Moreover, Die Werkself – Leverkusen’s nickname – is now hunting for the 2022-2023 Europa League title.
“I have been playing football for many years, rumours are normal but we (Bayer Leverkusen) still have a lot to achieve,” said Alonso as quoted from Goal International, Friday (5/5/2023).
“That’s why my mind is 100 per cent here for the last few months. And my mind is also 100 per cent here for next season.”
Alonso has been appointed as coach of Bayer Leverkusen since October 2022. He has a contract with the German club until June 2024. The 41-year-old coach managed to revive Bayer Leverkusen, which had slumped at the start of the season. Werkself is now in sixth place with 48 points from 30 matches. Of that total points, Alonso contributed 43 points from 22 matches.
At this time, Bayer Leverkusen is also competing in the 2022-2023 Europa League. They will face AS Roma in the semifinals.
