Sebastian Vettel wins Monaco Grand Prix

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel won at Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday to widen the gap at the top of the drivers’ championship. It was his third victory this season and his 45th career, as well as the first Scuderia victory in the principality of Monaco since Michael Schumacher in 2001 edition.

“It’s an indescribable sensation. It’s been a very intense race. I managed to push for a few laps, and I think that’s what made the difference,” Vettel said to media. “I can understand that Kimi is not happy. I would feel 100 per cent the same.” Vettel added.

The German driver finished ahead of his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, who was in the lead, and Red Bull driver Danie Ricciardo. The Mercedes driver Valterri Bottas ended up at the foot of the podium.

Verstappen completed the top-5, ahead of the Spanish Carlos Sainz son. The Dutchman was thus able to complete the Monaco Grand Prix for the first time on his third attempt after having been forced to retire in 2015 and 2016 respectively with Toro Rosso and Red Bull.

On Sunday, Raikkonen started from first place for the first time in nine years, but he had to be wary of his team-mate at his side on the front row. Both Ferrari drivers had a spotless start, and Vettel closed the door at Botas in the entrance of the first corner.

After Raikkonen and Bottas returned to the pits to get new tires, Vettel perfectly synchronized hi stop on lap 39. When he returned to the track, he found himself just in front of the Finn. At the end of the race, Raikkonen was hiding his frustration.

“On Saturday, I had the impression that we had not exploited our full potential,” Raikkonen said after the race. “Today, we proved it. I took a chance when Max [Verstappeb] and Valtteri [Bottas] entered the pits. It’s a second place, but it has a bitter taste,” the Australian added.

Under these results, Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel currently at the top of Formula 1 table standings with 129 points, 25 points ahead of his rivals Lewis Hamilton.
