Sheffield United Secure Promotion Ticket to Premier League

Sheffield United secured promotion to the Premier League after beating West Brom 2-0 on Thursday, ensuring they finish second in the EFL Championship standings.

Sheffield confirmed their promotion with three games remaining of the season.

Sheffield United join Burnley as the two teams to be automatically promoted from the Championship.

Sheffield United are struggling at the top of England’s second tier since being relegated from the Premier League in 2021. They have collected 85 points from 43 games this season and also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, where they were eventually knocked out by Manchester City.

Second-half goals by Sander Berge and Anel Ahmedhodzic earned them a win over West Brom to move seven points clear of third-placed Luton Town, who have played 44 games.

“We’ve worked so hard for this all year and to do it at home in front of our own crowd is very special,” Berge told Sky Sports.

“We want to give back to the club and the fans. I came here when we were in the Premier League and now we are back where we need to be,” he continued.

Sheffield United enjoyed a stellar season in the Premier League following their promotion from the Champions League in 2019 under previous coach Chris Wilder as they finished ninth in England’s top flight.

However they had to be relegated the following season which saw Wilder sacked as the club picked up only 23 points.

Last season, they failed to get promoted after being defeated by Nottingham Forest in the playoffs.

Promotion could be worth more than £300 million ($373.95 million) over five seasons if a club survives their first season in the Premier League, according to last year’s Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance.

Sheffield United, formed in 1889, won the First Division in 1897-98 and were four times FA Cup winners.
