Singapore Keen to Break the Swimming Gold Medal Record at the 32nd SEA Games

The Singapore swimming team is keen to break the record of 23 gold medals set by themselves at the 2015 and 2019 SEA Games.

Singapore has always dominated the swimming competition at every SEA Games. Singapore’s team won 21 out of a total of 47 gold medals at the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam in 2022.

The men’s swimming team, in specific, won eight gold medals in 20 events, while the women’s team took home 13 of the 20 medals.

However, due Singapore lost the gold medals in the women’s 50-meter freestyle and the men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay, the ones listed above effort is regarded as having fallen short of the goal.

Coach Gary Tan said that the Singaporean teams want to recover what they have lost by winning at least 23 gold medals and want to break the record at the 32nd SEA Games.

“We went through the flu and the virus, but came back in time. I want athletes to take this into account and not be complacent.” Tan told MediaCorp.

In the women’s event, Quah Ting Wen and Amanda Lim hope to win the 50m freestyle gold medal, which is currently held by Thailand’s Jenjira Srisaard.

Meanwhile, in the men’s event, Singapore also wants to recover the number one position after falling into the hands of Vietnam – the team that won 11 gold medals at the 31st SEA Games.

Maximillian Ang Wei and 17-year-old swimmer Nicholas Mahabir will challenge two gold medals of 50m and 100m frogs belonging to Pham Thanh Bao.

Singapore also hopes to win the gold medal in the 4x100m freestyle race. Last year, they finished first in this event at the 31st SEA Games but was eliminated because Jonathan Tan made a mistake of starting early, allowing Vietnam to win it.
