St. Louis Cardinals Win 17th Straight Game, Clinch National League Wild-card Playoff Spot

The Milwaukee Brewers has entered a game that ended in a big celebration for the second time on two games. Except on Tuesday night, it was they who were heading towards the visitors’ canoe.

Brandon Woodruff started but only pitched four innings, and the tiniest lights of the Milwaukee reliever box were not up to a St. Louis Cardinals offense that just can’t be stopped for the moment.

The result was a 6-2 loss to the Brewers at Busch Stadium on Tuesday night, the fifth in a row for the Cardinals, who extended a franchise record by winning their 17th straight game.

They clinched the second and final wild card spot in the National League after a performance led by dependable old Adam Wainwright, who started and won his 20th career game against the Brewers, and three Milwaukee pitching homers.

“To be able to go to the playoffs is what it’s all about. I’m just thankful to be a part of this team. This team is unbelievable, we’ve carried each other. I’m just happy to be a part of it. This is why I’m here.” Arenado said.

“I’ve never been a part of a group that just keeps coming. It’s unbelievable, we just keep fighting. It’s a collective group” he added.

St. Louis was 71-69 on Sept. 11 before the winning streak, the longest in team history and the longest in the major leagues since Cleveland took 22 in a row in 2017.

They will play in the NL wild-card game on Oct. 6 at the Los Angeles Dodgers or San Francisco Giants whichever team does not win the NL West. The postseason trip will be the third in a row for the Cardinals.
