Team Sky’s Michal Kwiatkowski leads Tirreno-Adriatico after stage five

Team Sky’s Michal Kwiatkowski leads the Tirreno-Adriatico race in Italy after finishing third in Sunday’s fifth stage between Castelraimondo and Filottrano.

The Polish cyclist heads the overall standings by three seconds, taking over the blue jersey from Damiano Caruso who is now second in the updated classified.

Sunday’s 178km stage was won by Briton Adam Yates who burst clear during the final five kilometres to win by seven seconds.

Three-time world road race champion Peter Sagan won the sprint for second, while Sky’s Geraint Thomas crossed the line in sixth spot.

Thomas, who had led the overall standings earlier in the week, is now fourth overall, 29 seconds adrift.

BMC’s Caruso was 10th on Sunday, with winner Yates – who rides for Mitchelson-Scott – 36 seconds behind Kwiatkowski in sixth spot.

After going clear on the final Muro di Filottrani climb, Yates never looked under threat although Alexey Lutsenko of Astana, and Movistar’s Mikel Landa, attempted to put pressure on him.

Yates’s success made it a bittersweet day for the family, after his twin brother Simon missed out on winning the Paris-Nice classic by just four seconds.

Meanwhile, four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome came home over eight minutes behind Yates, which leaves him 31st overall, exactly nine minutes off the pace.

Stage Five (178km Castelraimondo to Filottrano):

1 Adam Yates (Gbr/Mit) 4 hours, 16 minutes, 35 seconds,

2 Peter Sagan (Svk/Bor) at 7 seconds,

3 Michal Kwiatkowski (Pol/Sky) s/t,

4 Tiesj Benoot (Bel/Lot) s/t

5 Rigoberto Uran (Col/Efd) s/t.

Overall standings:

1 Michal Kwiatkowski (Pol/Sky) 21 hours, 31 minutes, 28 seconds,

2 Damiano Caruso (Ita/BMC) at 3 seconds,

3 Mikel Landa (Esp/Mov) + 23,

4 Geraint Thomas (Gbr/Sky) + 29,

5 Rigoberto Uran (Col/Efd) + 34
