Valentino Rossi aims to get on the podium at Phillip Island

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider Valentino Rossi came into the weekend at the Phillip Island aiming to get on the podium, but on paper the Italian’s day was difficult. Especially the qualifying session, played under raindrops.

“These were difficult conditions, because when it rains jut a little bit and you are with slicks on the track, you have to be very brave.” Rossi said.

“At this track you go very fast and you never know how much water is on the ground. It’s a shame, because I think under normal conditions today, we could start Sunday’s race from a slightly better position, as in FP3 and FP4 I was quite strong.” Rossi continued.

“Anyway, starting from the third row, I will try my hardest. Today I improved the feeling with the vike and my pace, but we have to wait for tomorrow, especially for the tyre choice. We hope to have sun and good weather for the race.” Rossi said.

Currently holding third place in the championship standings, the Doctor looks forward to fighting for second by bridging the-9-point margin at one of his most successful circuits on the MotoGP calender.

The nine-time World Champion has secured numerous trophies at the Phillip Island circuit and his experience will certainly come in handy during this Sunday’s race.

“I like the Australian GP, I’m always very happy to come here. I like the place and also the Phillip Island circuit. We did a nice race last year, I arrived second and Maverick third.” Rossi said.

“We will try do a positive race also this year, but the Australian GP is a bit particular. The track is unlike any other circuit, and above all we will have to waut and see what the weather conditions will be like. We will do our best, as always.” Rosssi added.

When asked by GpOne about the performance of other Yamaha riders Maverick Vinales and Johann Zarco, the 39-year-old rider Rossi said Vinales and Zarco are also fast riders.

“It’s a combination of things. It’s a circuit where the Yamaha has always rolled well. Vinales and Zarco are also fast drivers” Rossi sadi.

“I’m expecting a group race. The choice of tires will be important, because at the back I am still undecided between soft and medium. Let’s hope it will be nice. My aim is to fight for the podium.” he added.
