The reason Yann Sommer was willing to leave Bayern Munich to join Inter Milan has been revealed. The Swiss goalkeeper admitted that he was willing to join the Nerazzurri – nicknamed Inter – because of the guarantee of appearing as a starter.
Sommer only joined Die Bavaria – Bayern’s nickname – in January 2023. However, just a few months later, he joined Inter Milan in the summer transfer market for a fee of 6 million euros. This 34 year old goalkeeper is contracted until June 2026.
Sommer was recruited because Inter needed a main goalkeeper after Andre Onana left for Manchester United. On the other hand, if he remains at Bayern, his position will be immediately threatened as soon as Manuel Neuer recovers from injury. He was recruited from Borussia Monchengladbach in January 2023 because Neuer was injured.
“This is a new challenge and being the first choice has given more enthusiasm for this stage in my career,” said Sommer, quoted from Football Italia, Friday (8/9/2023).
“It was a completely new experience at Bayern Munich, I learned a lot, but now I’ve come to Inter to become Number 1 and that changes a lot of things,” he continued.
The Swiss national team goalkeeper admitted that he was increasingly comfortable living in the city of Milan. Apart from that, Sommer also assured Inter Milan fans not to worry because he is 34 years old. Even though he is in three heads, he emphasised that he is still in excellent condition.
“I feel in top condition and want to play football for a long time. Milan is also a beautiful city and I feel comfortable here. I have started to understand the language quite well, even if I still don’t speak it,” Sommer added.
Yann Sommer has played three matches with Inter Milan in the 2023-2024 Italian League. From these three matches, he helped Inter achieve three wins and always kept the goal clean from conceding, aka clean sheets.
