Roma closed the first half with a three-goal lead thanks to the actions of Paulo Dybala (2′), Renato Sanches (8′), and Empoli midfielder Alberto Grassi’s suicide (35′). Then in the second half, I Giallorossi aka The Yellow-Red were able to add four goals.

Dybala put his name on the scoreboard again in the 55th minute, followed by Bryan Cristante’s goal in the 80th minute. New striker Romelu Lukaku scored his first goal for Roma in the 82nd minute. It was AS Roma’s first win in Serie A this season. Previously, Jose Mourinho’s fleet achieved negative results, namely a draw with Salernitana and then consecutive defeats to Hellas Verona and AC Milan.

Even though his team won a landslide victory, Mourinho admitted that he was not satisfied with the performance of Paulo Dybala et al on the field. “It was a good performance, but it wasn’t a 7-0 performance. We could see that there were several players who were not fit to play with high intensity for 90 minutes,” said Mourinho after the match, quoted from Football Italia.

The Portuguese tactician also apologized to Empoli for the heavy defeat they experienced. “I’m sorry for Empoli. However, this is football and sometimes 7-0 can happen. I still see some things about the team that I don’t like from the pitch, and we will evaluate them more deeply with my staff later,” said Mourinho.

Thanks to their first win this season, AS Roma rose to 12th place in the 2023-2024 Italian League standings with four points. Meanwhile, Empoli, who always lost their first four matches of the season, is sinking at the bottom of the standings.
