Tottenham Hotspur made it to the quarter-finals of the English League Cup after winning on penalties over Chelsea 5-4 (1-1) at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, London, Wednesday (30/9).
Tottenham vs Chelsea duel took place at a slow tempo so that no dangerous opportunities were created.
Chelsea became the team that got the first chance in the 18th minute. Japhet Tanganga’s mistake in anticipating a cross sends the ball towards Callum Hudson-Odoi.
However, Hudson-Odoi’s shot was still right at Hugo Lloris.
A minute later, Chelsea opened a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Chelsea’s goal was scored by Timo Werner with a hard shot just outside the Tottenham penalty box.
Tottenham only reacted in the 35th minute. The threat to the Chelsea goal was given by Erik Lamela but his shot was saved by Edouard Mendy using his feet.
In the second half, Tottenham had a chance to equalize to 1-1. Reguilon has an open opportunity to score a goal but his shot from inside the penalty box can still be blocked by Mendy.
In the 73rd minute, Werner had a chance to increase the score to 2-0. Werner receives feedback from the right side of the attack.
The German forward held the ball and then fired a shot which Lloris managed to catch while falling.
Tottenham, who did better in the second half, managed to equalize through Lamela’s goal in the 84th minute. Reguilon’s bait was calmly completed by Lamela to make the score 1-1 and made the match go to penalties.
In the shootout, Tottenham managed to come out as winners. Masoun Mount’s failure as the last penalty taker for the Blues made it out with a score of 4-5.
