Barcelona coach, Xavi Hernandez, reacted after Real Madrid was confirmed as champions of the 2023-2024 Spanish League. He also acted relieved by congratulating his rival.
Yes, Barcelona had to suffer a bitter defeat against Girona in the 2023-2024 Spanish League. The bitter thing is, this defeat also made their rivals, namely Real Madrid, confirm themselves as champions of the Spanish League this season.
Barcelona lost 2-4 when they visited Girona’s headquarters at the Montilivi Stadium, Saturday 4 May 2024. This defeat meant that the team led by Xavi Hernandez failed to delay Real Madrid’s title.
On the same day in the previous match, Real Madrid won 3-0 over Cadiz. This result makes the steps for the team nicknamed Los Blancos to become champions even more open, but they have to wait for the results of Barcelona versus Girona.
Unfortunately, Barcelona actually had to lose to Girona, giving way to Real Madrid to lock in the Spanish League title this season. Because, the 87 points collected by Los Blancos can no longer be caught by Girona (74 points) and Barcelona (73 points) in a competition with only three matches remaining.
Xavi also still respects his rival. The Spanish tactician congratulated Real Madrid for successfully emerging as champions this season.
“I want to congratulate Real Madrid, they are the ones who scored the most points,” said Xavi, as reported by Marca, Sunday (5/5/2024).
On the other hand, Xavi admitted that he was quite disappointed with the defeat suffered by his team at Girona. According to him, Barcelona did not play effectively and often made mistakes. He also revealed that the Blaugrana must improve if they want to compete next season.
“The fact is that we lost control of the game because of a big mistake that should not have happened. It keeps happening to us. We had a game to decide and we gave up. “We have to change a lot to compete next year,” said Xavi.
“We have seen both sides play brilliantly until the 60th minute. Lack of effectiveness is killing us. We conceded easily but we lacked strength and were more effective. Then we made blatant mistakes that were not appropriate to the level of the players and the club. “Today I am very sad and disappointed,” he continued.
Even though the championship title is no longer possible, Xavi has the ambition to bring Barcelona to finish in second place at the end of the season. The 44 year old coach will try his best to bring the Blaugrana to a clean sweep of the remaining Spanish League matches this season.
“We will fight until the end. “We want to win all four matches, even though being in second place no longer depends on us,” said Xavi.
