Andy Murray managed to claim his second win over a top 10 player of the 2021 season when he participated in this week’s Stockholm Open.

In a quite dramatic match, the British tennis player managed to knock out the first seed, Jannik Sinner 7-6, 6-3, a victory that sent her to the quarter-finals of the Stockholm Open.

The win over world number 10 Sinner was the former world number 1’s second win over a top 10 player this season after he also beat then world number 10 Hubert Hurkacz in Vienna.

In a match that saw long rallies from all over the court and incredible angles, the Briton managed to secure the only break point he faced to beat the Italian in 2 hours 10 minutes.

“It was a very tough match. He hits a powerful ball from behind the court, so there’s a lot of long rallies and a lot of running. But this is probably my best win of the season. I want to keep it going,” said Andy Murray.

First seed Sinner was unable to find much of a gap in the Brit’s serve after he squandered a break point opportunity in the first set. The Briton knocked out the first seed in the tiebreak after 74 minutes and looked convincing in the second set to book a place in the Stockholm Open quarter-finals.

Murray’s win wasn’t the only thing that led to a shock loss in Stockholm this season. US tennis player Tommy Paul also knocked out fifth seed and compatriot Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4. Paul will face the British national in the quarter-finals and they will meet for the first time.

In other action, the player who appeared in the quarter-finals of the 2021 US Open, Botic van de Zandschulp also beat seventh seed Marton Fucsovics with a pretty tight victory 7-6, 3-6, 7-5.

In the quarter-finals, Dutchman van de Zandschulp will meet the seed again when he takes on second seed Felix Auger Aliassime who beat Serbian Filip Krajinovic 6-3, 6-4.

After falling behind with a break in the first game of the match, Auger Aliassime snatched four games in a row to take the lead and after that he kept going.

World number 11 Auger Aliassime made his Stockholm Open debut and is still looking for a first ATP tournament title of his career after he reached his tenth quarter-finals of the season.
