Italy have failed to automatically qualify for the 2022 World Cup after a 0-0 draw with Northern Ireland on Monday.
In the qualifying round, Italy lost points to Northern Ireland. Being in Group C, Italy only accumulated two victories and faced two defeats.
While Northern Ireland, which became the leader of the standings, won twice, drew once and lost once.
Italy’s 0-0 draw in Northern Ireland meant Switzerland finished top of World Cup qualifying Group C following their 4-0 win over Bulgaria in Lucerne.
“We can’t do anything about it now, we have this game in March and will try to give our best,” Italy coach Roberto Mancini told RAI Sport.
“At the moment we are struggling to score goals, despite dominating possession. Northern Ireland put everyone in defence and we struggle to break sides like that down.” Mancini.
It was the first time that Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup after failing to appear in the 1930 World Cup for non-technical reasons.
The glory of Italy in the greatest international soccer event was in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006. However, there are two dark stories surrounding Italian football. The first bitter moment was Italy’s failure to enter the 1958 World Cup which took place in Sweden.
“Yes, of course, I know what happened in 1958 – I hope not to go back in time so much. We want to qualify tomorrow and the concept does not change: we need to play without anxiety.” Mancini said.
“We are in a bit of a difficult moment after three incredible years. It will take calm.” the Azzuri boss added.
FIFA will make the playoffs draw on November 26 in Zurich and teams will need to advance past two opponents to reach the World Cup.
