Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek, a Polish tennis player, won in three sets in the opening match of the Qatar Open, Doha 2022.

Even though he had to lose the second set, the seventh seed did not give up and kept fighting until he beat Swiss tennis player Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to qualify for the third round of the Qatar Open.

The 2020 French Open champion took less than 2 hours to claim the victory that sent him into the third round of the Qatar Open for the first time in his career.

With this victory, the world number 8 avenged the defeat of the world number 36, Golubic, who defeated him in straight sets at Wimbledon in 2019.

This time, it was Swiatek who took the win by winning two-thirds of Golubic’s second serve and converting six of his ten break point opportunities.

The Polish national saved a total of five break points in her two service games before claiming the first set. However, Golubic did not stand still and came back in the second set and broke the Pole in the final game to equalize one set.

However, Iga Swiatek regrouped in the third set until he took a 5-2 lead. Serving to win the match, the seventh seed saved another two break points with aggressive play, dictating the match with his forehand with the remainder of the game before sealing victory.

Waiting for Swiatek in the third round of the Qatar Open is Russian tennis player Daria Kasatkina. The seventh seed took a 2-1 head to head lead against Kasatkina after she won their meetings at the Australian Open and the 2022 Dubai Tennis Championships.

Kasatkina progressed into the third round after her Romanian opponent, Jaqueline Cristian pulled out of the match as the score was 6-2, 2-2 over Cristian.

While American Madison Brengle set foot in the third round after her opponent, the 12th seed who has won the Qatar Open twice, Victoria Azarenka was forced to withdraw from the match.

The match will be the first meeting between the two players, but the Belarusian is unable to play due to a left hip injury. World number 60 Brengle will now meet fifth seed Garbine Muguruza for a place in the Qatar Open quarter-finals.
