Daniil Medvedev reached the final of the 2022 Australian Open final only to then suffer a very tough defeat. The Russian looked to have it all under control against Rafael Nadal, but he couldn’t avoid an epic comeback.
“It was horrible to miss that match, but I have to learn. I’ve had difficult moments in my career and I’ve always found a way to get back to my best, so I’m sure I’ll play even better than my best performances.” Medvedev said.
“But it hurt a lot to miss that game and I’m motivated to have another opportunity in Melbourne. The level of players there is brutal here, it’s like an ATP 500.” Medvedev added.
Looking back, Medvedev, who was world number one in 2022, recognises that it was very difficult to deal with that frustration, but turns the page for the new season.
“It’s great to face the best in the first tournament of the year because that sets the pace for a Grand Slam, but if I lose early I’m in trouble because I’d have to decide whether to play in the week prior to the Australian Open.” Medvedev said.
“I knew it was going to be a tough match and I’m excited to play well. I would rather have played in the United Cup, but I understand perfectly why they don’t let us play.” Medvedev added.
Medvedev is motivated by the prospect of facing Novak Djokovic in the 2023 Adelaide International semi-finals. He admitted he enjoys playing against Djokovic and that they have a good rivalry.
“I really like playing with Novak, I think we have a very nice rivalry and we’ve always shown a very good level in our matches.” Medvedev said.
“I really want to reach the semi-finals and if he’s there, great. If you’re not, it’s because someone managed to beat the best-fit player in the world.” he added.
