MotoGP Testing New Communications System at Jerez

The Jerez tests, which took place the day after the Spanish Grand Prix won provided an opportunity to try out two new radio communication devices.

According to Dorna Sports Director Carlos Ezpeleta, this long-term project aims to establish radio communication with the riders when they are on the track.

“In 2020, riders were complaining about poor flag visibility, not knowing what was happening on the track and wanting to be notified in case of flags, rain or incidents,” Carlos said.

A first version was tested at Misano in 2020 and two new systems are now being evaluated. The first fits around the earplugs used by riders while the other goes directly into the ear.

Comfort, noise, durability and reliability are of paramount importance, and a number of riders have tried the devices to provide feedback.

At this stage, the project is focused on improving communication between race management and on-track drivers using pre-recorded messages sent via a one-way system, for rider safety.

“We did a test at Misano in 2020. However, the riders weren’t really happy with the first system, they didn’t feel comfortable with it and the noise.” Carlos said.

“So we decided to go with LED panels and imposing them on all circuits from last year, which has been a great success.

“The riders are really won over and I think we have made major progress with regard to the flags in a way general and the transmission of information to the pilots during the races and the sessions,” he added.

As for the riders, few have expressed themselves on this subject. Fabio di Giannantonio, who has not tried radio communication devices, explained that it could be inconvenient for riders.

That feeling is the same for VR46 Ducati Team rider Luca Marini, who goes one step further.
