Diver Jonathan Chan, with his much talked about bronze medal in the Men’s 10m individual platform yesterday had finally left to regret for his disgraceful performance in the fifth round that deprived him of a great entrance to the SEA games.
The first well appreciated dive of this 18 year-old Singaporean got him in the second position of the eight-strong field and found himself to be the one who was squeeze in the standings between Malaysia’s 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Ooi Tze Liang and Asian Games bronze medalist Chew Yiwei.
However, the eventual contribution that he has made to record a lackluster 54.45 in his fifth dive was nothing but nerve. Even this was the setback which let him finish at 356.55 points and a bronze medal after the completion of sixth & and final dive.
Ooi had won the gold with a score of 415.50 points at the time when her fellow citizen Chew grabbed the silver with 393.65.
In spite of missing out on the silver, Chan was glad with his overall performance. Even he added that he was nervous in those initial moments. Later he pacified himself. But he reiterated his surprises to get himself in contention for silver at the very commencement. But he only told himself to keep focusing on each dive. But it was unfortunate that he slipped up & did not get those final two dives flawlessly.
Chan was also in a mood of lamentation about an array of injuries which had hindered him from giving his 100 percent. After sustaining a back wound in time of training in the March of previous year, his preparations got affected afterward.
Even at the last of August, on his way to heading towards Nanjing for the Youth Olympics. Chan had to suffer from a tricep injury and finally finished as 10th out of 11 divers in the 10m platform. He also made confession that he had gained huge experiences just by observing the Malaysians and other top divers’ performances. Even it was his declaration that he was being unlucky with injuries.
Even one Burmese diver Htet Zaw Myo pulled out after he fell on his back in his fourth dive and was taken away on a stretcher on the day before. TODAY understood that he was taken to the hospital for observation on recommendation by the medical team on ground.
With Singapore’s heading towards the last day of the SEA Games diving competition with one silver and three bronze medals, Twins Mark and Timothy Lee should be in action in the Men’s 3m coordinated springboard final at the very time Freida Lim came out with competitive nature to contest in the women’s 10m platform.
