Anett Kontaveit Starts WTA Finals With Victory Over French Open Champion

Anett Kontaveit of Estonia’s WTA Finals 2021 season in Guadalajara has started by beating the 2021 French Open champion.

The eighth seed did not face much of a problem as she defeated second-seeded Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 6-4 in the first match of the WTA Finals group stage.

In a match that brings together two players aged 25 years and appear in the final tournament of the season.

For the first time, an Estonian national won after 1 hour 15 minutes in the Teotihuacan Group.

With this victory, the eighth seed has won the last 11 matches he has played. Those winning streaks included winning titles in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca which helped him qualify for this season’s WTA Finals.

The Estonian has 26-2 in her previous seven tournaments, including winning titles in Ostrava and Cleveland. Prior to this achievement, this season he recorded 19-13 and was in 30th position in the standings heading into the WTA Finals. Now, he occupies the highest rank of his career to date, world number 8.

Kontaveit is ahead of the other women in winning matches in hard-court tournaments, with her 37th win on the court having knocked out 2021 French Open champion Krejcikova in their first meeting.

With a win over world number 3 Krejcikova, the eighth seed bagged her fifth win over a top 10 player this season. In addition, she now bagged her third career win over a top 3 player, after she beat world number 1 Angelique Kerber in Rome in 2017 and world number 2 Caroline Wozniacki in Rome in 2018.

“I’m definitely very happy to have won, it was a tough match. I think I managed to win a lot of points from my first serve,” Anett Kontaveit said.

“During the summer I had a bit of a losing streak, then I started working with Dmitry Tursunov and really hoped to get some wins. I managed to win in Cleveland, and it all started from there.”

“I trust myself a bit more and my game is working well from getting more wins and playing a lot of games. And feel really comfortable and enjoy playing tennis.”

While the Czech tennis player, Krejcikova said, “The match was quite difficult. I thought Anett played a solid game and served well. But I’m trying to see positive results.”
