Ange Postecoglou And Spurs’ Hopes For Trophies

Last season, Tottenham Hotspur experienced a decline in performance. Only finished in eighth place with 60 points. Achievements in other domestic competitions are also quite disappointing. They are lost to Sheffield United in the fifth round of the FA Cup, and lost to Nottingham Forest in the third round of the Carabao Cup. On the European stage, the club from North London doesn’t talk much. Status as Group D champions, the Champions League finalists for the 2018/2019 season fell in the round of 16 after losing to AC Milan.

This result is closely related to Antonio Conte’s departure in March 2023. Before Conte left, Spurs were still able to compete in the top five rankings. However, after Conte’s harsh criticism of the club, it was indicated as the trigger for the worsening relationship between Conte and the club until they finally separated. Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason took over the positions left by Conte until the end of the season. Unfortunately, they only won three of 10 matches and failed to get Spurs to compete in the European tournament the following season.

After the 2022/2023 season ended, Tottenham Hotspur management moved quickly by recruiting Ange Postecoglou on July 1 2023. Uniquely, this date was the same date when Mauricio Pochettino (and also Nuno Espirito Santo) was appointed as Spurs coach. Several names were rumored to be landing at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, including Mauricio Pochettino. So Spurs’ decision to propose to this Australian coach looks speculative. However, that’s not entirely true.

Daniel Levy explained clearly that Ange, with his experience and philosophy, is expected to develop Spurs not only for the first team, but also for the academy. This means that what Levy has in mind is a long-term goal. Levy explained

Ange brings a positive mentality and an attacking and fast style of play. He (also) has a strong track record in developing players and understands the importance of the academy for the club. “We (Tottenham Hotspur) are very happy to have Ange join us as we prepare for next season,” said Levy as quoted by the Independent.

Levy’s long-term vision is certainly a step that should be appreciated. However, fans’ hopes of getting a title soon (not the Audi Cup) should not be ignored. Ange needs to realize this responsibility while also proving his ability to make an instant impact on Tottenham Hotspur’s trophy cabinet. Of the 10 teams he has coached (including the national team), only three teams did not win a title with Ange. So the question is, can Ange Postecoglou bring Tottenham Hotspur to break their title fast? If you can, how long will it take?
