The Brazilian national team players have told the president of the CBF, Rogerio Caboclo, that they do not plan to play in the 2021 Copa America tournament in their hometown.
Conmebol announced a few days ago that the Copa America will be held in Brazil from June 13 to July 10, 2021. The four venues are: Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, Cuiaba and Goiania, according to reports.
Copa America was initially going to be held in Colombia and Argentina. However it was cancelled amid to COVID-19 pandemic in both countries.
Brazil do not take in a good way the news that their country will organise the Copa America because they are also going through a serious health crisis. More than 460,000 people have died since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Brazilian players resigned due to the social crisis and the protests they have made against the government. The Albicelestes will not be able to organise the fair amid to a huge number of infections and hospitalisations amid to COVID-19.
The president of the CBF, Caboclo, on Wednesday has met with the players, who intend not to play the 2021 Copa America.
Neymar Jr is one of the players who is upset by the controversial decisions that issued by Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro.
The Paris Saint Germain striker refuse to take the part in Copa Ameica because he has the desire to go to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Bolsonaro said the decision was not up for discussion and that the tournament, which involves players across South America, did not pose a health risk.
“As far as it is up to me, and all the ministers, including the health minister, it is all decided,” Bolsonaro said.
“From the beginning I have said about the pandemic: I regret the deaths, but we have to live. But the decision has been criticised by a number of lawmakers in the country.” he added.
