Celtic, Glasgow City, and Hibernian win matches as action continues in SWPL. Rangers retain the top spot!

From the latest action in the ongoing Scottish Women’s Premier League season, last season’s top three teams Glasgow City, Celtic, and Rangers have won their respective matches, alongside other rival teams like Hibernian, Montrose, and Spartans.

Rangers scored a thumping 4-1 win over Motherwell, Spartans defeated Partick Thistle 1-0, Celtic defeated Hearts 3-2, Montrose walked out with a 3-1 win against Dundee United, and Hibernian and Glasgow City dominated with 5-0 victories over Aberdeen and Hamilton Accies respectively.

Following these results, Rangers have retained their top spot in the league rankings with two wins in three days, with Celtic, Glasgow City, Patrick Thistle, and Aberdeen filling in the second, third, fourth, and fifth spots respectively. Hibernian’s massive 5-0 win over Aberdeen took them to the sixth spot with 11 points from seven games. Rangers are on top with 19 points, closely followed by Celtic with 18 points.

Rangers Vs Motherwell (4-1)

Rangers clinched a convincing 4-1 over Motherwell courtesy of the opening goal scored by Kirsty Maclean at 30 minutes followed by goals from Rio Hardy, McLauchlan, and Kirsty Howat. The Mother’s side did manage to get one goal which was scored by Carla Boyce, but it wasn’t enough for them to pull the game back in favour as the Rangers walked away with their third straight win of the season at the Broadwood Stadium

Glasgow City Vs Hamilton Accies (5-0)

Defending champions Glasgow City took on Hamilton Accies after securing a place in round two of Champions League qualifying. The visitors made a bright start as they took an early lead just 8 minutes into the match when Aleigh Gambone’s cross was volleyed home by Lisa Forrest.

Forrest then provided a sublime assist for Kenzie Weir who headed home from a corner at 30 minutes, her first goal of the match and second of the season. Glasgow took a solid  3-0 lead in first-half stoppage time following Gambone’s first goal for the club, rounding off a great team move by dinking over Accies keeper Emma Thomson.

Lauren Davidson scored the fourth goal for Glassgow from a free-kick which was followed by the fifth and final one by Brenna Lovera who headed the ball in to round off a comprehensive win for Glasgow City. It was a nightmare for Hamilton goalie Emma Thomson who conceded five goals in her debut match for the club.

Celtic Vs Hearts (3-2)

Celtic who are on the third spot behind Rangers and Glasgow City took on Hearts in a tough encounter managing to pull off a fighting 3-2 win at the Excelsior Stadium. The match saw three back-to-back goals being scored within the first ten minutes with Hearts taking a 2-1 lead over the Celts.

The first goal came when Hearts defender Emma Brownlie sent in a cross to Danni Findlay who converted the spot at just 5 minutes. This was followed up by the second Hearts goal at 8 minutes when Katie Lockwood’s corner was headed home by Carly Girasoli. Fran Alonso’s side finally got their opening goal a few minutes later through a header of their own as Caitlin Hayes made no mistake at the back post.

Paula Partido – on loan from Real Madrid – then got her first Celtic goal to draw the Hoops level after good work by Shen Menglu with 34 minutes played. Chinese international Shen completed the turnaround just five minutes into the second half with a header, assuring Celtic a valiant 3-2 win.

Hibernian Vs Aberdeen (5-0)

Fresh from their Edinburgh derby victory, Hibernian made it back-to-back league wins to leapfrog Hearts in the table. After an open first half at Meadowbank, it was the hosts who took the lead as Abbie Ferguson set up Jorian Baucom, who slotted home.

A defensive mix-up allowed Baucom to double Hibs’ lead in the second half before she sealed a hat-trick from the spot after being brought down by Madison Finnie, who was sent off. Things got worse for Aberdeen as Shannon McGregor – on her 100th appearance for Hibs – lobbed substitute goalkeeper Annalisa McCann as the hosts went 4-0 up.

Hibs rounded off a resounding victory in the closing stages as substitute Brooke Nunn slotted home after McCann could only parry Eilidh Adams’ initial strike.
