Champions League Top Score, Lewandowski End Ronaldo and Messi Glory for 12 Years

Bayern Munich came out to win the 2019-2020 Champions League. The victory tasted even sweeter after the striker, Robert Lewandowski, officially confirmed himself as the top scorer of the Champions League this season.

Bayern emerged victorious after beating French giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the top party. Playing at Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Monday (24/8/2020), Bayern won by a thin score of 1-0.

The only goalscorer in the match was Kingsley Coman. The French passport player appeared to be a hero for Bayern after scoring a goal in the 29th minute with an unstoppable header.

Meanwhile, the striker, Lewandowski, failed to score a goal in this match. However, the Polish passport player still ensured that he won the title as the top scorer of the 2019-2020 Champions League after packing 15 goals.

This success is certainly another bonus for Bayern, apart from winning the 2019-2020 Champions League. Unfortunately, Lewandowski still cannot surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s record goals in the Champions League, which totaled 17 goals.

However, Lewandowski need not be discouraged. The reason is, his success in becoming the top scorer in the 2019-2020 Champions League has made history in itself by breaking the dominance of Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Because during the last 12 years in the Champions League, there were the names of Ronaldo and Messi who always adorned the top scorers. Although there was the name Neymar in 2014-2015, his tally of goals had something in common with Ronaldo and Messi. So that in that season there were three names on the top scoreboard.

Since the 2007-2008 season, the names of Ronaldo and Messi have alternately decorated the top scorers. Ronaldo won it seven times, while Messi six times. This number includes when Ronaldo and Messi both won the top scorer with Neymar in 2014-2015.

When Lewandowski’s figure was able to bring glory to himself and the club, Ronaldo and Messi fell. The team they defended failed to reap neat results.

Ronaldo, who defended Juventus, actually achieved the worst result by being eliminated in the last 16 from Olympique Lyon. Meanwhile, Messi, who strengthened Barcelona, ran aground in the quarter-finals with an embarrassing 2-8 defeat to Bayern.
