Eleider Alvarez to join Top Ranking Promotion

Top Rank has officially announced today that it has entered into a multi-year agreement with Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) to co-promote the fights of the WBO light heavyweight world champion, Eleider Alvarez.

Alvarez’s first fight (24-0-0, 12 KOs) included in this co-promotion agreement will be held on February 2nd, at the Ford Center at the Star, in Frisco, Texas.

The Storm will therefore play a highly anticipated rematch against former world champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (32-3-1, 28 KOs); a duel that will be broadcast by the ESPN network.

Alvarez defeated Kovalev by knockout in the seventh round in a duel that turned into slugfest last August. This impressive victory propelled the 34-year-old Colombian boxer to the highest levels of the sport.

As an amateur boxing star, who represented Colombia at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Alvarez was trained in Montreal by the pros under the tutelage of renowned coach Marc Ramsey. Upon his arrival in Quebec, Alvarez, who did not take the time to communicate well in French, quickly caught the attention of fans.

“I am really proud of this agreement. I want to thank GYM for always believing in me. I also want to thank Top Rank and ESPN for the trust they place in me and my talent. I cannot wait to show the world that I am a very great champion.” Alvarez said.

GYM president Yvon Michel said Alvarez is one of the best boxer in this planet, and soon the WBO champion needs to become a big boxer.

“The world made the discovery of Eleider Alvarez last August in Atlantic City with speed, athleticism, strength, and endurance. Soon, his personality will override the fact that he holds the WBO title, and the world will then discover that he has everything he needs to become a big star,” Michel said.

TOP Rank CEO Bob Arum, meanwhile, he believes the future looks bright now for Alvarez when his second fights with Kovalev begin on February 2nd, 2019.

“Eleider Alvarez has shown that he has the heart of a real champion when he finished the fight in force by passing the knockout to Sergey Kovalev,” Arum said.

“We will go ahead and work with Yvon Michel and his team to bring Eleider into the biggest and best possible fights, and this will begin on February 2 during the rematch with Kovalev.” Arum added.
