Enzo Maresca, Successor to the Italian Coaching Tradition at Chelsea

Enzo Maresca, Successor to the Italian Coaching Tradition at Chelsea

Enzo Maresca is a strong candidate for Chelsea manager for the 2023/2024 season. The 44 year old man will be the 7th Italian coach to serve at Stamford Bridge.

Not long after parting ways with Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea immediately moved to look for a new manager. Having approached Kieran McKenna, Chelsea then chose Enzo Maresca as the main target.

Like a tit for tat, according to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea’s interest in Enzo Maresca has been responded to positively. Enzo Maresca is ready to become the new manager and is currently discussing contract details.

Leicester City, who have Enzo Maresca under contract until June 2026, are also ready to let him go. However, Leicester is trying to get the right compensation value.

Enzo Maresca is still very young, 44 years old. When he was still actively playing, his position was midfielder. He retired as a player in 2018, with Sevilla as his last team.

After retiring, Maresca became coach of Manchester City’s age group team. He worked for the U-21 and U-23 teams. Then, in 2021, Maresca was appointed as Parma coach.

At the start of the 2023/2024 season, Maresca received a contract from Leicester City. From here the name Maresca soared. He brought The Foxes to become champions of the Championship Division as well as promotion to the Premier League.

Now, Maresca is ready to continue the tradition of Italian coaches at Chelsea. Maresca will continue the beautiful stories written by Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte, and even Roberto Di Matteo.

For the Stamford Bridge public, seeing Italian players or coaches is not taboo. Gianfranco Zola will always be remembered as one of the important figures in the ranks of Chelsea legends.

Then, before Maresca, there were six Italian coaches who had worked for Chelsea. Roberto Di Matteo is one of the iconic ones, because he gave the Champions League title, with the status of a charter coach.

Before Roberto Di Matteo, Carlo Ancelotti, Claudio Ranieri and Gianluca Vialli were Chelsea coaches. Apart from that, there are also Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri who are also coaches who train Chelsea.
