Winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June with Toyota and double winner of the Monaco GP in 2006 and 2007, Fernando Alonso on Thursday has completed his test of an Andretti-run 2018 Indycar at Barber Motorsports Park.
The Spaniard, who is leaving Formula 1 at the end of the 2018 season, is considering a full-time effort in the Indycar Series in 2019.
“It was a good day, a fun day. I love to test new cars and to test the Indycar on a road course is something special.” Alonso said.
“I’ve been lucky enough to test it wet conditions, in intermediate conditions and in dry conditions, so overall I had a good feeling on every type of track. The weather was good for us today, a little bit of wind in the afternoon but a positive day.” Alonso added.
The 37-year-old driver competed in the 101st Indy 500 on the big oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His test on Thursday was the first time he drove an Indy car on a road course.
“Probably my instinct will tell me [I prefer the] road course, because it’s what I’ve been used to doing all my life, but the Indy 500 was an amazing experience, so 50/50,” Alonso said.
“I think I love the way the car feels on a road course, but I love the way you compete on ovals, timing the tows, traffic and all the overtaking manoeuvres I think are a little bit easy on the ovals, so in terms of track action I loved the Indy 500.” Alonso added.

A victory in Indianapolis next May would allow Alonso to join Englishman Graham Hill as one of the most complete drivers in the history of motorsport, the only one to win the three prestigious events, Le Mans, Indianapolis and Monaco.
Alonso’s first participation in the Indy 500 in 2017 had resulted in a break on breakage 21 laps from the finish while he was at the forefront. He considered one of the most talented drivers on the field, has not won in F1 since 2013.
It was his 32nd victory at the Spanish GP in Barcelona in a Ferrari. However, He participates next weekend at the GP of Singapore.
