Marco Reus, The Loyal One

The name Marco Reus in the world of football is not as famous as Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. He also did not play for big clubs like Barcelona or Real Madrid.

However, in matters of loyalty, Marco Reus is very worthy of emulating. Indeed, Reus does not only play at one club like Francesco Totti at AS Roma and Lionel Messi at Barcelona. But, Reus’ sacrifice for his current club, Borrusia Dortmund is truly inspiring.

Little Reus spent 12 of his childhood at the Borrusia Dortmund academy until finally he decided to move to Rot Weiss Ahlen to get more flying time. Reus, who is 17 years old, managed to start 2 times and played in 14 matches with Ahlen who was then in the 3rd caste of the Bundesliga.

In the following year (2008-2009), Reus showed his capacity with Ahlen by playing 27 games and 4 goals in the Bundesliga 2. In 2009, Reus played in the Bundesliga for the first time after signing a contract with Borrusia Monchengladbach. At Gladbach, Reus transformed into a reliable attacking midfielder under the tutelage of Lucien Favre.

It didn’t take long for Reus to realize his dream, in 2012 he managed to return to his hometown after receiving Borrusia Dortmund and being contracted for 5 years. With Dortmund, he also believes that Dortmund is a strong contender for the Champions League every year.

Sure enough, Dortmund immediately became a serious contender for the Champions League and ended as Runner Up in 2012-2013. However, hopes of winning the next Champions League slowly disappeared. After building a strong team in 2012, Dortmund started to lose their important pillars one by one.

In 2013, Dortmund lost their midfield spirit in Mario Gotze after he left for rival club Bayern Munich. Dortmund also lost their main striker, Robert Lewandowski in 2014 who moved to Bayern Munich as well.

Not quite up there, Dortmund was also left behind by Jakub Blaszczykowski, Ciro Immobile and Kevin Grokreutz in 2015. Slowly some players left, but Marco Reus continued to be at Dortmund’s side.

2016 was the pinnacle of Dortmund’s limp. In that year they lost 2 mainstay back walls at once, namely Neven Subotic and Matt Hummels. In addition, Gundogan and Mkhitaryan also decided to leave. Reus stayed behind.

After impressive performances from new Dortmund recruits Ousmane Dembele and Aubameyang, they did not stay in Dortmund for long. Dembele was bought by Barcelona and Aubameyang was sold to Arsenal. Again, Marco Reus stayed behind despite the many offers made for him.

Despite repeatedly failing to win the Bundesliga and Champions League with Dortmund, Marco Reus remains and shows his loyalty, unlike other players who can easily leave a club, especially after a bad season.

In 2020/2021, Dortmund with Marco Reus remain Bundesliga candidates. It’s just that, the problem of consistency always haunts them because they do not have sufficient squad depth.

Indeed, in the core squad there are names like Matt Hummels, Axel Witsel, Julian Brandt, Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland. However, when Haaland is injured or Reus is injured, there are not many other players on the bench who can play as well as the two of them.

Moreover, it was widely reported that Sancho was being pursued by Manchester United and Haaland was being monitored by Real Madrid even though he only joined last season. Of course it will be a crushing blow for Dortmund and Marco Reus if Haaland and Sancho are sold by Dortmund. That’s because for sure they won’t be able to talk much in the next season without the help of Sancho and Haaland.

As Die Borussen (the name of Dortmund fans), of course we hope that Dortmund will be able to cut Bayern’s dominance in the Bundesliga as soon as possible. That is of course so that the dream of Bundesliga champion Reus with Dortmund can come true, and his loyalty to Dortmund can be paid off!
