Still remember the name Martin Braitwhaite? The former Barcelona striker is now causing a stir after reportedly wanting to buy his former club, Espanyol after feeling belittled by the La Liga club.
Braitwhaite had defended Barca from the middle of the 2019/2020 season until the end of the 2021/2022 season. He then moved to fellow Catalan club, Espanyol.
In his first season, Braitwhaite failed to help Espanyol from the threat of relegation. However, in the 2023/2024 season, the Danish striker contributed greatly to Espanyol.
Braitwhaite scored 18 goals in the Segunda Division and led Espanyol to a promotion ticket back to La Liga through a victory in the play-off round.
Last year when Espanyol was relegated, Braitwhaite actually wanted to leave to play in the highest caste competition. However, this wish failed to come true because of obstacles from Espanyol.
At that time, Espanyol offered Braitwhaite a new contract. Braitwhaite also felt that the new contract offer was a mockery of him.
In July 2024, Braitwhaite chose to terminate his contract with Espanyol by paying his own release clause so that he could join another team.
A week later, Braitwhaite immediately joined the Brazilian club, Gremio. Now, as reported by Marca, Braitwhaite is apparently planning a ‘revenge’ on Espanyol.
Braitwhaite reportedly wants to find a way to buy Espanyol after feeling hurt by how he was treated by the club.
“Now we have to enjoy it and see what happens in the future. I don’t know anything, I’ll talk about it in the next few days,” said Braitwhaite.
“A year ago the club offered me a contract extension, but that was rude,”
“Let’s see if they want me to stay here because the offer I received a year ago showed that they didn’t trust me.”
It’s no surprise that Braitwhaite bought Espanyol. The 33-year-old striker does have abundant wealth following his success as a businessman.
Braithwaite’s source of wealth is apparently a real estate company that he founded with his uncle, Philip Michael in 2017. The company is estimated to be worth 250 million US dollars.
Braithwaite himself reportedly initially invested ‘only’ 850 thousand US dollars. By the end of the first year, his company was worth 10 million US dollars.
NYCE Companies is now said to have assets of 1500 apartments. They are also claimed to be developing 500 more properties in Philadelphia and New Jersey.
In addition, Braithwaite and his wife and French businesswoman, Anne-Laure also have a luxury clothing and restaurant business in Barcelona.
