Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have already reflected on the crash caused by the Briton after the start of the Belgian GP this Sunday after the heat of the moment.
But after the seven-time champion took the blame and Alonso played down the bid, it was Hamilton’s Mercedes boss Toto Wolff’s turn to apologise to the Alpine driver.
“He just left him no room on the inside. Fernando was on the kerb already and there is not much more that he could have done,” Wolff said.
“Sorry for the for the incident from the team’s point of view, it rarely happens to Lewis.” Wolff added.
Hamilton was lifted into the air after turning in on the Alpine driver during their battle at Les Combes on the first lap, forcing the former Red Bull driver to retire.
On the other hand, Hamilton was found to have been at fault for the crash but it resulted in some choice words from Alonso over the team radio.
“What an idiot closing the door from the outside. I mean, we had a mega start but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first.” Alonso said.
The incident took place shortly after the start. Alonso, third on the starting grid due to penalties given to Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Esteban Ocon for switching components of their power units, jumped to second behind pole position Carlos Sainz, with Hamilton in third.
Hamilton admitted misconduct in the bid after the race, but said he would no longer speak with his rival after understanding about the comments.
Formula 1 returns this weekend, on September 4, with the Dutch GP. Eight rounds remain until the end of the championship with Verstappen leads the driver standings champion.
