Mick Schumacher Will Be Following in His Father’s Footsteps in Australia GP

Mick Schumacher spoke about his father Michael Schumacher’s past exploits in the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, on the eve of making his own start at the Melbourne circuit for the first time this weekend.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to know the circuit and also the city. I came here with my dad and saw him race in Melbourne, it was really great, and I’m looking forward to driving here myself and having my own Formula One driving experience in Australia,” Schumacher said.

The 23-year-old driver is taking part in this Grand Prix for the first time after having escaped unharmed from a serious accident during qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix two weeks ago.

Schumacher said he was ready to take on the Melbourne circuit where his father, seven times world champion, had won four victories at the wheel of his Ferrari in the 2000s.

“My dad holds the lap record in a 2004 Ferrari. I got the chance to drive that car and it’s an amazing car,” Schumacher said.

“We’ll make our own laps in a similar-looking car, actually. The cars have turned back in time and they’re looking a bit more like they used to with the high front wing, so it will be interesting.” he added.

Former F1 champion Michael Scumacher set a lap record in Melbourne in 2004 which still stands but is set to be swept away this weekend after changes to the circuit to cut the time on each lap by at least five seconds.

He crashed and hit his head on a rock while crossing an off-piste area in 2013 in Switzerland, suffering a serious head injury despite wearing a ski helmet.

Some small pieces of information have been made public over the past Mike years since his crash, but ‘SCHUMACHER’ delves deeper than ever before into the life of the racing legend.
