Murray wins Shanghai Masters

Andy Murray wins his 13th Masters title and grabs a total ok 10,485 ranking points. Murray has now won 10 consecutive matches the last of which he beat Roberto Bautista in the Shanghai Masters final. He beat the Spaniard 7-6, 6-1 to comfortably clinch the title. The victory closes the gap between him and Novak Djokovic to just 915 points. Murray could dislodge Novak Djokovic from the world number one ranking. However in his post match speech he reiterated his goal was not to go for number one ranking.

“Nine-hundred points doesn’t sound loads because you get 1000 for a Masters,” Murray told Sky Sports. “But he [Djokovic] is going to win matches in just about every tournament he plays. If he gets a bit fresher, he is going into the indoor events in Paris and London and he hasn’t lost indoors for a very long time. So it’s difficult to do it this season, but there’s an opportunity in the early part of next, year, because I won’t have many points to defend.”

“In the last few months, I have won a lot of matches and made improvements, I have been moving forward better and changed the direction of the ball better. I have also come up with some bigger serves when I have needed them.”

“My goal wasn’t to finish number one at the end of this year but in the early parts of next year there is an opportunity – 900 points doesn’t seem like loads.”

“But Novak will win matches. He is the best player in the world. I don’t think he has lost an indoor game in a long time.”

Murray has now won 23 sets consecutively. Murray’s claim to the number one spot will be hindered by the fact that Djokovic will play in Paris in a month’s time, it is an event he has been winning in a row for four times now. However if Murray manages to win in both Vienna and Paris irrespective of the fatigue he might endure, he will become number one.
