Bianca Andresscu

Young tennis player, Bianca Andreescu became the first Canadian to win a single Grand Slam title after winning a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Serena Williams in the final of the US Open this season.

The 19-year-old, Andreescu, became the youngest Grand Slam champion since Svetlana Kuznetsova at the 2004 US Open. The victory also required Williams to suffer a fourth successive defeat in the Grand Slam final, once again dashing hopes of claiming the 24th Grand Slam title in his career.

“It’s really difficult to explain in words, but I’m very grateful and grateful. I worked really hard for a moment like this”. Exclaimed Andreescu, who only won two Grand Slam matches before debuting at the US Open.

Thanks to this victory, Andreescu recorded 8-0 against the top 10 tennis players this season and will move up to the world number 5 on Monday (09/09).

“This season is like a dream come true. “Being able to compete in the final against Serena, a living legend of this sport, is truly amazing”. Continued Andreescu who was not even born when Williams won his first Grand Slam title at the 1999 US Open.

“It’s not easy at all. I have to prepare myself as best as I can in every game. And try not to focus on who I fight with. I am truly proud of the way I handled it all.”

Starting the top of the party, Andreescu appeared convincing by grabbing a 4-2 advantage. But in the next game, Williams secured five break points with a combination of a number of attacking ace and ground stroke that riveting in order to survive in the match.

But Andreescu responded by creating a set point opportunity and Williams rewarded her with the first set victory after a double foul.

Andreescu, who even failed to reach the main draw at Flushing Meadows in the last two seasons – twice failed in the first qualifying round – continued to feel confident after opening the second set with 2-0 before getting a golden opportunity to close the match by winning 5-1.

However, Williams struck with a forehand winner in defense, even snatching 14 of 17 points to equalize 5-5. This did not make Andreescu surrender. With his best abilities, Andreescu managed to create match point opportunities. Williams was able to secure Andreescu’s first chance. But Andreescu sealed the victory on his second match point opportunity with a forehand return that Williams failed to return.
