Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has indicated he wants to keep Reheem Sterling at Etihad and urges the management to extend his forward’s contract.
Sterling has a contract that expires in 2020, and his manager believes the England forward is a big part of the Citizens’ plans this summer.
Guardiola, thought, says that City is keen to negotiate a new contract soon, with the club understood to want to sign him up until 2025.
“In terms of contract, I’m not the guy, it’s Txiki [Begristain], the director of the football, who’s talking about that,” Guardiola said.
“No doubts, it’s so important. But you know the deals are the deals. The agents and many circumstances, maybe other clubs are interested in him. Anything can happen but he knows how important he is to us.” Guardiola added.
Sterling is enjoying his season so far with City after scoring 20 goals and 11 assists this season. He linked with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
According to reports, Zinedine Zidane’s side are planning and overhaul of their formation this summer which could see the likes of Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 23-year-old Englishman had become the most expensive player in EPL after joining City from Liverpool in 2015 for a fee £49 milllion. He impressed in England’s 1-1 draw with Italy on last Tuesday night.
Asked about Sergio Aguero, who missed Argentina’s two friendlies match with a knee injury in recent weeks, Guardiola believed his great striker could make his comeback for EPL and Champions League clash.
“He is much better. We will see tomorrow if he is involved. But we hope he could make his comeback sooner before Champions League.” Guardiola said.
“First of all, that’s important for him to score after a long time injured, a striker need goals. With the problems we have right now with Sergio, it’s so important for Gabriel. For his confidence, it’s so important.
“We have to know, everybody has to know, that we have to be in our best levels or you cannot overcome those stages.
“Especially the quarterfinals of the Champions League, Goodison Park, a long time since City is not able to take a good result. We have not been able to do it, but that is a challenge. It’s a challenge to ourselves, not the opposition, to ourselves, that we are able to do it.” former Barcelona and Bayern manager added.
