Raheem Sterling became a winning star after contributing two goals for the England national team that successfully defeated Spain 3-2 in the UEFA Nations League Group 4 continued at the Benito Villamarin Stadium, Sevilla, Monday (15/10).
This became Sterling’s special goal which managed to end the drought of his goal for the last three years at England. The Manchester City striker successfully packed two first-half goals interspersed with Marcus Rashford’s goal.
The Spanish host was able to score two replies in the second half through the action of Paco Alcacer and Sergio Ramos. This is the reply of The Three Lions who had swallowed a 1-2 defeat of Spain at the first meeting at Wembley, last month.
Sterling said he was satisfied that he could end a goal drought at Union Jack which had frustrated him. His last goal with the England national team was created in the European Cup qualifier for Estonia, 15 October 2015.
“It’s a very pleasant feeling. I gave a target for myself to score goals. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but it’s my job to score goals,” Sterling told Sky Sports.
“This means a lot to me. As you said, I have been fasting goals for three years and that means a lot in matches like this,” he continued.
The 23-year-old player was indeed assigned as an attacker under the direction of coach Gareth Southgate, not playing in the position of a winger as played by Manchester City.
Sterling, who won full confidence, appeared as a less than satisfying English core player in the 2018 World Cup. Played with Harry Kane, Sterling failed to complete a number of golden opportunities.
Despite being an action star, Sterling did not forget to praise his other colleagues. According to Sterling, England’s victory was won because it started the game well from the first minute.
“The playing team is very brilliant today. We are pressing from the start and are very effective,” Sterling said.
“Previously, we also played well but failed to finish the opportunity. That changed because we started the game well and were also good at finishing,” said the former Liverpool player.
Raheem Sterling, now 23 years old, made his debut in England in 2012. Since then, Sterling has played 46 games and has scored four goals and 11 assists. Uniquely, two previous Sterling goals were scored when England played at home, Wembley Stadium.
The sharpness of the former Liverpool player began honing in the UEFA Nations League after successfully contributing a pair of goals to the Spanish goal. Furthermore, England will host Croatia at Wembley on Thursday (10/18).
