Tommy Coyle to fight in USA before showdown with Ritson

Tommy Coyle will fulfil a dream of boxing in the USA later this year before pursuing a fight with Lewis Ritson, says trainer Jamie Moore.

It has been a memorable year already for the 28-year-old Coyle who travelled to Liverpool back in April and stopped Sean Dodd to win the Commonwealth title, his long-awaited first major honour in the sport.

The victory sparked scenes of unbridled joy and pride and there were suggestions that, on such a high, ‘Boom Boom’ may call it a day on his career.

But the Hull man – who has since relinquished the rainbow belt which Joe Cordina and Dodd will battle for on August 6 – has been handed another dream opportunity and is now set to head across the Atlantic to compete in the USA.

“Tommy has been promised by Eddie [Hearn] that he will have a big fight in America in September or October,” revealed Coyle’s trainer Jamie Moore when speaking with Sky Sports’ Toe 2 Toe podcast.

“He’s been a great servant to British boxing over the last five or six years so he deserves this chance to fulfil a dream, he’s always wanted to box stateside.

“The American fans and TV will love his style, he’ll be a big hit over there.

“He’s put a lot of good fights on for the fans over the years so Eddie has promised he will deliver this dream for him.”

There had been talks that Coyle may put his Commonwealth strap on the line against explosive British champion Ritson next but, although Moore says his lightweight charge is “well up for it”, he says it is a domestic showdown that will come once the Hull man heads to The States.

“I’ve seen on social media that Tommy replied to a tweet from Ritson about a fight and he said ‘I’m up for it’,” Moore added.

“First though, let Tommy achieve his dream of boxing in America and then he will come back and do it. Again, Tommy is up for giving the fans what they want.

“I’d be very confident in a fight like that. As much as I rate Ritson who is a top, dangerous, prospect, he’s very much untested at this stage, while Tommy has a lot of experience.

“As much as I really like him, Ritson makes a lot of mistakes. So far, people are getting dragged into his fight and allowing him to exploit their weaknesses and not the other way round. We’d make him the one making mistakes and set traps, I’m sure we could set the right gameplan.

“But first, let us achieve this American dream and then let’s get down to business and get that fight done before the end of the year.”
