Valve's Different Settlement between Ceb and Kuku Racism Cases

Valve’s Different Settlement between Ceb and Kuku Racism Cases

Throughout the 2018-2019 DPC season, we were surprised by three cases of racism carried out by Dota 2 players. The first is Andrei Gabriel “Skemberlu” Ong. The Filipino player wrote “Gl chingchong” against Chinese representatives, RNG in DreamLeague Minor Season 10.

The second case happened to Carlo “Kuku” Palad after chatting all the way with racism that made the Chinese Dota 2 community angry. And what’s hot is Sebastian “Ceb” Debs with racist chat problems that are aimed at Russians.

Of the three cases, 2 of the cases that most caught the Dota 2 public’s attention , which was the case that happened to Kuku and Ceb where for Kuku, he was banned from being present by Valve in Chongqing Major 2019.

For Ceb himself, he is still allowed to attend EPICENTER Major 2019, but OG punishes him in the form of a fine and all his income from the EPICENTER Major will be donated to a charity.

Here we see Valve’s “injustice” in resolving the issue of racism carried out by Kuku and Ceb. There are several hypotheses found by writers who can answer, why the resolution of the Kuku and Ceb case is different and seems to be “favoritism”.

The first hypothesis is the difference in pressure from the community, where the Chinese Dota 2 community responds more ferociously than the Russian Dota 2 community.

We ourselves know that many Dota 2 teams from China participated in criticizing the actions of Kuku racism such as PSG.LGD, Vici Gaming and Team Aster.

As for the case of Ceb, only  Alexei “Solo” Berezin loudly voiced about racist issues carried out by Ceb. So that the result of not too much pressure made by the Russian Dota 2 community, making Valve not punish Ceb like punishment for Kuku, even though Kuku received more support from Dota 2 talent.

The second hypothesis is the difference in attitudes of the government (China and Russia) in this case of racism. The Chinese government is very strict with the decisions or problems of each individual. Not only Kuku, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry are also banned from this country. Meanwhile, the Russian government tends to be passive so Valve in deciding the problems of the two cases is different because Valve did not get pressure from the Russian government.

The third hypothesis that caused Valve not to give the same sentence to Ceb was because Ceb’s status was an IT champion while Kuku was not.

If Ceb is prohibited from appearing on EPICENTER Major 2019, then the hype for the major tournament will be reduced and of course it can be that “the money flowing” to Valve will be reduced due to the absence of one of the punished IT champions not present.

Besides that, OG is also currently awaiting its resurrection so that the moment is very suitable to make Valve not give the same punishment as Kuku.

The following 3 hypotheses that could be the reason why Valve was “favoritism” in solving cases of Kuku and Ceb racism. Keep in mind that these three hypotheses are not necessarily true, because they are based solely on the analysis of a series of facts found.
