Vancouver City Council Postpones Vote on 2030 Winter Olympic Candidacy to 2021

Postpones Vote on 2030 Winter Olympic Candidacy to 2021

Vancouver City Council has postponed its decision to support the bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympic Games until 2021.

In a message posted on social media, councilor Melissa De Genova said she managed to postpone the decision until March 2021.

She admitted that this report will make it possible to draw up a report which will identify the benefits of the organization of the Olympic Games, and which will allow the population to register to express themselves on the subject.

De Genova made his request earlier this year asking the city council to study the possibility of running for an Olympic bid, but it has been relegated to oblivion following the coronavirus pandemic.

If the request is not amended following the tabling of the report in March, then De Genova wants the municipal council to send a letter of intent to the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees, to the local representatives of the First Nations, as well as to the provincial and federal government representatives, for their views, and funding sources.

“To have a report back on the feasibility of this, I think there is a real opportunity that can come from a further Olympic host city role,” Councilor Lisa Dominato said.

“Particularly around issues of equality, diversity, and legacy pieces that could supports our most vulnerable citizens, including housing.

“I’d be really interested from hearing back from city staff on what some opportunities might look like in the context of an Olympics, and how we could look at benefiting a wide range of residents through legacy pieces, as well as celebrating sport and making that inclusive as well and accessible.” she added.

The debate had been scheduled for April 1 before being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
