Wayne Rooney close to Everton return

Wayne Rooney close to Everton return

Everton have been the talk of the Premier League when it has come to transfers this summer.

The club have been the biggest spenders of the transfer window so far, bringing in five players for close to £100million.

However, according to recent media reports, the Toffees are not finished yet.

In fact, those same reports suggest that Everton are in talks to re-sign Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, who could sign a two-year deal at his former club.

The striker has not travelled with the rest of the United squad for their USA tour reportedly in order to tie up his return to Merseyside.

This does not fit with the rest of the signings

Bringing 31-year-old Rooney back to the club where he started his illustrious career seems a strange move. It does not fit in with the clubs other signings this summer, who have been in their early to mid-twenties.

This is a strategy put in place to bring down the average age of the squad and to develop a strong team for years to come. Signing a 31-year-old player who is considered by many to be over-the-hill does not quite fit with the club’s summer business so far.

This feels like a sentiment signing to me. It feels like certain individuals at the club feel like the striker is coming home after financial strive forced the Toffees hand in selling the star.

A good move for Rooney

This is a very good move for Rooney. He gets to stay in the Premier League and play for a club he loves. His relationship with the Everton fans has softened in recent years and he has been spotted at numerous Toffees games.

No doubt, Rooney is still a big fan of his boyhood club and it seems the ideal move for him to make at this stage of his career.

At Manchester United, he was being phased out of the picture slowly but surely. Rooney was no longer a key player for the Red Devils, despite Jose Mourinho praising the England international. The United fans have been on the forwards back for a good few seasons.

Rooney is not the player he was at 22 and why anybody expects him to be when he has been playing professionally since he was 16 is beyond me. Of course, he will be in decline, his body has taken 15 years of professional football. A body was arguably never meant for professional football.

Rooney may not be at his peak. However, his football brain is still there and so is his will to win. The experienced star will be even more determined to prove his doubters wrong at Goodison Park after being written off at United.

His winning mentality and experience of winning silverware will only help his teammates at Everton if the move goes through as expected.

Everton showing tremendous ambition

Everton last season were the best of the rest last season in the Premier League. They even briefly threatened to gatecrash the top four. However, ran out of steam in the end and finished a creditable seventh place.

The top four will be where the Toffees are aiming next season and they are odds of 10/1 to finish in the Champions League spots next season.

Boss Ronald Koeman and director of football Steve Walsh have been busy this summer. They have done some sterling work in strengthening the Toffees team.

In a busy summer for the club, Wayne Rooney will probably prove to be the Toffees most high profile and influential of signings. Who knows maybe his return could spark something special on the blue side of Merseyside next season.

Will Wayne Rooney be a good signing for Everton?
