Williams parting ways with Latifi at the end of 2022 F1 season

Williams Formula 1 team has announced the departure of Nicholas Latifi at the end of 2022 season.

Canadian-Iranian driver, Latifi made his F1 debut with Williams at the start of 2020. Initially, he entered with a three year contract expiring at the end of 2022 season.

However, he failed to match the performance of George Russell and Alex Albon performance. He struggled to impress against his team mates.

Williams confirmed the news of Canadian departure on Friday. The team announced an end to agreement between the two at the end of 2022. It announced no further extension of agreement between two parties.

Williams will announce the replacement fro Latifi “in due course.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Williams Racing – all the people back at the factory and those I work with trackside – for the last three years,” said Latifi in a statement.

“My initial F1 debut was postponed due to the pandemic. But we eventually got going in Austria and, although we have not achieved the results together we hoped we would. It’s still been a fantastic journey.

“Getting those first points in Hungary last year was a moment I’ll never forget. I will move onto the next chapter of my career with special memories of my time with this dedicated team. I know none of us will stop putting in every effort until the end of the season.”

Latifi remain incapacitated during the complete season of his debut year at Williams. The team struggled at the back of grid. He score first point for the team over two years at Hungary last year, with seventh place on the grid.

However, following his crash at Abu Dhabi finale last year he faced death threats and online harassment. Because of his accident, the championship out-come turned upside down following safety car.

The harassment has impacted his mental health leading to failure to finish higher than 12th this season. While other drivers, Albon and Nyck de Vries, managed to score points for the the team.

Jost Capito, Williams F1 boss, appreciated Latify. He claims Canadian as “a great team playerm who has a great attitude towards his colleagues and work. He is well liked and respected throughout the business.”

“Our time together is now coming to an end. But I know he will put full effort in to maximise what we can do together for the remainder of this season,” said Capito.

“We wish him all the very best of luck for his future, both in and out of the cockpit.”
