Albon: Honda at par with Mercedes

Alex Albon, Red Bull 2020 driver, is optimistic about their power plant manufacturer Honda.

Albon believes that Japanese manufacturer has made progress and their product is now capable of competing with the top line especially Mercedes. He pointed out to the team performance at Brazilian Grand Prix where Red Bull dominated through-out the sessions.

Honda returned to the Formula 1 in 2015 but could not perform better. However, the manufacturer went in the right direction that they finally were able to compete other players.

Few disagree with the notion that it was all engine that dominated the Brazilian GP, rather they think that high altitude of Interlagos somehow helped competing others. This resulted in Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly finishing first and second on the podium with Lewis Hamilton finishing third.

Albon was aware with this disagreement and went on to comment before commencement of Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

He said, “I doubt the altitude played an important role. In my opinion, Ferrari still has an advantage but we are on a par with Mercedes, even if we don’t know what their wing settings are exactly.

“My point is that it’s not just about altitude and the characteristics of the track – Honda is making serious progress,” the Thai rookie added.

He also added the compliments of Mercedes’ driver Valtteri Bottas, “Our chassis is very good. There is little or nothing to complain about in terms of the mechanical side or the aerodynamics.

“But we do lack top speed on the straights, which is about efficiency and engine power. We have to get better,” added the Finn.

Verstappen also showed his content with Red Bull-Honda combo. He showed his resolve to contend for 2020 world championship.

Daniil Kvyat, Honda-powered Toro Rosso driver, seems happy with his car also. He also said, “We all feel good about it.

“We are getting closer to Ferrari and Mercedes. We only need one last step and then we can really compete with them on equal terms.”
