Juventus officially fired Massimiliano Allegri two days after beating Atalanta in the 2023-2024 Coppa Italia final. Allegri’s dismissal was carried out on Friday (17/5/2024) Italian time, not long after Juventus held the 2023-2024 Coppa Italia championship celebration on Wednesday (15/5/2024). Allegri’s Juve won 1-0 over Atalanta in the Coppa Italia final thanks to Dusan Vlahovic’s single goal in the fourth minute.
At that time, Allegri received a red card after shouting directly into the face of the fourth assistant referee, Maurizio Mariani. He also showed uncontrollable emotions when he took off his jacket, tie and buttons on his shirt.
Allegri demonstrated controversial behavior again during the celebration of the 2023-2024 Coppa Italia title. The coach from Livorno seemed to be giving a signal to Juventus Sports Director, Cristiano Giuntoli, and the club’s CEO, Maurizio Scanavino, to leave his team.
Allegri then made another commotion outside the field. The owner of five Coppa Italia titles is said to have threatened and insulted the Editor-in-Chief of Tuttosport media, Guido Vaciago. Juventus said in a statement that Allegri’s behavior was not in line with the club’s “values”. “The dismissal was carried out following certain behavior during and after the Coppa Italia final which the club considered to be inconsistent with Juventus’ values, and the behavior that should be carried out by those who represent it,” read Juventus’ official statement.
Because of his behavior in the final against Atalanta, Allegri received a two-match suspension in the Coppa Italia. Apart from that, he also received a fine of 5,000 euros from the Serie A Disciplinary Commission. Allegri was judged to have “acted aggressively” and used language and gestures that insulted the referee.
Currently, Juventus is in fourth place in the 2023-2024 Italian Serie A League. This season, they were banned from participating in European club competitions due to a case of falsifying financial accounting.
Meanwhile, Allegri found that his second period coaching Juventus only lasted three seasons. He rejoined the club known as The Big Lady in July 2021 after spending his first period there in the 2014-2019 period. He was more successful during his first term at the club nicknamed Il Bianconeri (The White and Black) by winning five Serie A titles in a row from 2015 to 2019.
The only trophy he has won since returning to coach Juve in 2021 is the Coppa Italia 2023/2024 which he won this week. For the time being, the position of Juventus coach will be filled by Paolo Montero. The Juve legend was promoted from the U19 squad and will lead the senior team in the remaining two matches in Serie A 2023-2024.
