Bayer Leverkusen directed by Xabi Alonso officially won the 2023-2024 Bundesliga after crushing Werder Bremen 5-0. Leverkusen made history and went 43 matches without losing.
The 29th week of the 2023-2024 Bundesliga match between Bayer Leverkusen vs Werder Bremen at the BayArena Stadium, Sunday (14/4/2024) marked a new history. Bayer Leverkusen successfully won the Bundesliga for the first time. This historical achievement was confirmed by the team known as Die Werkself via a landslide 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen.
Leverkusen win over Werder Bremen was confirmed by goals from Victor Boniface (25′ pen.), Granit Xhaka (60′), and Florian Wirtz’s hat trick (68′, 83′ 90′). Thus, Leverkusen reaped 79 points in 29 Bundesliga matches during 2023-2024.
Alonso’s troops can no longer being caught up with Bayern Munich and Stuttgart, who are in second and third place with identical points collections, 63. Leverkusen’s success in winning the 2023-2024 Bundesliga was sweetened by their undefeated record. Throughout the 29 weeks of the top caste competition in the German League this season, Die Werkself achieved 25 wins and four draws.
Alonso’s Leverkusen record is even more impressive if you include their work in other competitions. This season, Leverkusen is unbeaten in 43 consecutive matches! They have now equaled Antonio Conte’s Juventus record of going 43 games without losing in the 2011-2012 period.
Victor Boniface’s penalty goal (25′) against Werder Bremen is a strong signal that Leverkusen’s unbeaten record this season will continue to extend. The referee awarded a penalty after Julian Malatini violated Jonas Hofmann in the penalty box. Boniface calmly placed the ball to the right.
Leverkusen got closer to the championship party after Granit Xhaka scored a beautiful goal in the second half (60′) with a powerful left foot kick. Xhaka’s shot went straight into the left corner of Werder Bremen’s goal.
Alonso’s Leverkusen once again showed off their ability to score goals from long-range kicks. Eight minutes later, Florian Wirtz scored a spectacular goal via a precision shot from outside the 16 meter box. Werder Bremen’s goal was shaken by Wirtz’s rocket shot which went towards the middle.
Leverkusen also closed the match against Werder Bremen with a score of 5-0 after Wirtz added two goals in the 83rd and 90th minutes. Wirtz’s second goal came from Exequiel Palacios’ accuracy in sending a long pass. Wirtz then kicked the ball towards the near post to increase his team’s lead.
When Wirtz secured a hat trick in the 90th minute with a horizontal diagonal kick, the BayArena was enveloped in red smoke. The Bundesliga champion party then broke out at BayArena. This is Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga title. They also broke the dominance of Bayern Munich, the champions of the German League in the previous 11 seasons.
