Manchester City Returns to Enjoying the Top of the EPL Standings

Before the 33rd match of the English Premier League (EPL), aka the English Premier League, the top position of the EPL standings was controlled by Arsenal (71 points). Second place is occupied by Liverpool (71 points, but less than Arsenal on goal difference). Meanwhile, third place is occupied by Manchester City (70 points).

However, after the 33rd EPL match took place, the position changed. Manchester City, who competed one day earlier than Liverpool and Arsenal, managed to get full points.

Entertaining Luton Town at the Etihad Stadium, Saturday night WIB (13/04) Manchester City managed to beat their guests with a big score of 5-1. Manchester City’s five goals were scored by Daiki Haishoka (2nd minute, GBD), Mateo Kovacic (64th minute), Erling Haaland (76th minute, P), Jeremy Doku (87th minute), and Josko Gvardiol ( 90th minute+3).

Meanwhile Luton’s only goal was scored by Ross Barkley. The English midfielder scored a consolation goal in the 81st minute.

With the victory over Luton, Manchester City automatically rose to first place in the EPL standings. Because Manchester City’s points achievement exceeds Liverpool and Arsenal’s points achievements.

The next day after Manchester City played their 33rd match, it was Liverpool and Arsenal’s turn to compete against their respective opponents. Liverpool host Crystal Palace, while Arsenal host Aston Villa.

If Liverpool can beat guests Crystal Palace, practically the first position will pass into Liverpool’s hands. But apparently Liverpool was unable to do it. Unexpectedly, Liverpool were knocked out by the guests with a narrow score of 0-1. Liverpool also failed to take over the top of the standings and remained in 3rd place.

This is Liverpool’s second defeat at home in a row. Previously, Liverpool lost 0-3 to Atalanta at Anfield in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final match (12/04). 2.5 hours later Arsenal played against Aston Villa. If they are able to beat Unai Emery’s team, Arsenal will certainly return to the top of the EPL standings.

However, just like Liverpool, Arsenal failed to beat their opponent. Arsenal actually lost more than Liverpool. Arsenal fell to Aston Villa with a score of 0-2. Liverpool and Arsenal’s failure to beat their opponents and actually losing to their opponents clearly greatly benefited Manchester City. The team coached by Pep Guardiola can now once again enjoy the top position in the EPL standings, which they have not occupied for quite some time.

With 5 matches left each and one match postponed, the competition for the EPL title between Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool will certainly be tight until the end of the competition. This is because the difference in points between the three teams is very thin.

However, looking at the latest EPL match results, Manchester City clearly has the upper hand. Manchester City just needs consistency to be able to defend the EPL title again.

Manchester City does not need to hope that its two competitors, namely Arsenal and Liverpool, will lose in their remaining matches. Manchester City maintained enough consistency to stay on the winning track by winning all the remaining matches.
